Networking Helped Me Take My Business To The Next Level

Jenni Kravitz, 57, lives in London and has two grown-up children. She runs Simply Dancing Partners dance school.

“I joined Athena women's network one year ago, originally as a way to find venues to host dance classes for my new business.  I came up with the idea of a dance school that guarantees expert partners for every student after I tried – and failed – to find a class for myself.

I lost track of the number of times I was left sitting on the sidelines. I knew there was a hole in the market. But although I'd had my own business before, it had been in IT, so I didn't have any contacts in the dance industry.

When I heard about Athena through a friend, I was a bit resistant about going along. But I'm so glad I did. It's a women's-only network and each monthly meeting is held over lunch. Before the food is served, everyone passes their business cards around the table and says a little bit about themselves.

The women come from all walks of life but, because it's a career based network, everyone is like-minded. Membership costs £235 for the year and you pay £20 for each meal, but it's worth it. I've never come away without at least one new business contact or an exciting idea for expanding my company.

My business would never have grown as successfully as it has without the help of Athena. It's also enriched my social life. I've become close friends with a number of ladies from my local group and I now often see familiar faces when I walk down the high street, which is a real boost.”

On the launch day of Athena St James' 2 months ago, I remember you talking about this article Jenni and it was really inspiring to see what Athena can do for our business and social lives. This impressed me and took away all hesitation of joining the group! Well done and I look forward to reading many more inspiring stories like these in the future.

Well done Jenni. This is an excellent article that will hopefully encourage those business ladies who have preconceived ideas that networking is to be feared to join the Athena Network & see how productive & enjoyable it is.
Nice article - well done!

This is a great article and well done Jenni, you look great! The photo shoot is brilliant and I love the colours all the women are wearing. If I wasn’t into networking already it would inspire me to get involved!

From the first moment I attended Athena Kensington I knew it was such a dynamic group that it would present great opportunities for those who were members. It was fantastic to hear that Jenni was going to be featured in Woman and Home and then to see the finished article. Marilena Narbona is an amazing Regional Director who gives her all to build the strongest foundations within each group from which stem great strategic alliances and friendship.

Well done Jenni you look great and really are a great example of what an a member can get from joining . I look forward to seeing you on the high street Hugs and blessings Kathryn
This article really does hit the nail on the head: more women are starting their own businesses these days, and many of them are using networking as THE route to success - and it works! I talk to many of my clients about networking and the importance of having a networking strategy, because going to 'drinks dos' and speaking only to the friend that you arrived with is NOT networking. Yes, networking should be about having fun, but it's also about meeting people and exchanging information (and, ultimately, business). Well done, Jenni, for getting this great profile boost AND highlighting the strength of women's networking!
I had the most wonderful day at the photo-shoot being made up and styled. We went to the home of Nathaniel Parker (TV's Inspector Lynley) and he pottered around in the background doing household chores - not good for the street cred but a definite bonus for the five ladies who were being photographed. I am really pleased with the result and thankful to Athena for giving me the opportnity to be involved. A special thanks to Marilena for working late into the evening and sending out the request from the journalist so quickly. This kind of publicity is a brilliant boost for any business as it is difficult to come by.
